Villages of Character
Mougins & Valbonne — History, Wandering & Exceptional Dining
Perched at 260 metres above the Bay of Cannes, Mougins is one of the best-preserved medieval villages on the Côte d'Azur. Its origins date back to Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the village took its current form, with cobbled lanes winding in an ellipse around the bell tower.
In the 20th century, Mougins became a magnet for artists: Pablo Picasso spent his last 12 years here, drawing in his wake Man Ray, Jean Cocteau and Fernand Léger. The village is now home to numerous art galleries and the Museum of Classical Art.
Mougins has also established itself as a gastronomic capital, with several Michelin-starred tables and shaded terraces perfect for a long, leisurely lunch.
Valbonne is one of the few villages in Provence built on a grid plan — a regular pattern of streets and arcades characteristic of the medieval era, inspired by the bastide tradition. Founded in 1519 by monks from the Abbey of Lérins, the village has preserved its original layout with remarkable integrity.
The Place des Arcades, the living heart of the village, is lined with century-old elm trees and stone arcade houses. Local markets, craft shops and cafés make it an authentic, unspoilt place, well off the beaten tourist track.
Valbonne is also a cosmopolitan village, long home to an international community — making it a particularly welcoming stop for visitors from abroad.
